Visitors in museums

The index of cultural demand in public and private museums and institutions rose in Italy from 22,600 visitors per museum in 2011 to 24,400 in 2022. The values for 2020 and 2021 are affected by the period of closure and the visitors’ limitations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the South, the number of museum visitors increased from 15,300 in 2011 to 19,700 in 2022.

Tourism rate

The tourism rate, which measures the days of presence of Italian and foreign visitors in all accommodation facilities per inhabitant, decreased in the period 2020-2022 due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Considering the previousdata, the values averaged from 6.0 nights per inhabitant in 2000 to 7 in 2022.  
In the South, the observed increase goes from 3.3 tourism nights per resident in 2000 to 4 in 2022.  

Days of tourists’ presence (italians and foreigners) per inhabitant on the overall hospitality facilities

Since 2007 up to today, the value of projects monitored and supported by the cohesion policies for Culture and Tourism has exceeded 13 billion euros, out of which over 5 billion concern projects financed in the 2014-2020 programming period.
